Yesterday (29/09/2010) Nintendo announced new details on its 3D handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. The 3D enabled but glasses-free mobile console will launch February 26th 2011 in Japan and in March that year in Europe and North America.

Nintendo has announced its next handheld gaming system intended to replace the current selection of DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL hardware. While the DS introduced the touchscreen to the Nintendo audience, the new system boasts glasses-free 3D gaming. Prepare to say hello to the Nintendo 3DS. How does it work? What does it do? What does it look like? We'll have to wait until E3 in June to find out when the 3DS will be officially revealed, but the company plans to launch the system before March 2011 in Japan.

Breaking news: Nintendo announces “3DS”, Glasses-free 3D handheld

The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld video game system. It succeeds the previous line of Nintendo DS systems. The device's main attraction would be its use of glasses-free 3D effects (thus ushering in the name 3DS), as well as its motion controls.

In a move that left many gamers scratching their heads, Nintendo released the 2DS, a portable gaming system that removes the glasses-free 3D screen and clamshell design for which the console is known. It's a big change, as all but one of Nintendo's recent handheld consoles have featured a hinge (the one exception being the GameBoy Micro). 2ff7e9595c
